ExpDB – an innovative knowledge management tool
What is ExpDB
ExpDB (a.k.a. Experience DB) is a software system which consists in a database of experiences, different situations in general, that are thought at a higher abstract level, the purpose being to manage diverse knowledge, in a controlled and organized manner. Oracle issue on virtual machine
One of my latest tasks was to install an application to a virtual machine, (running on a Vmware server). This application, built on client-server architecture, use an Oracle database so i had to install Oracle 10g and import the specific database for the application.
Installing Oracle and make it work seemed to be an easy task, theoretically, but it proved to be a real problem, practically. I had installed Oracle on VM (virtual machine) just as i would on my computer and at first everything worked just fine; the application was running to it’s normal parameters. The issues appear after restarting Oracle server, the database was not accessible anymore: “ORA-12505: TNS:listener could not resolve SID given in connect descriptor”.

Teambuilding from July 2007
Last Tuesday we had a new team building (first this year, at least for me). After a hot start (from the city concrete) we arrived at Curmatura, near Rasinari. Plenty of green (as you can see in the pictures), a small river, not so hot (only late afternoon the temperature was nicer – some would say even cold) and lots of cars (we had 9 or 10 cars for 15 persons). Some of us prepared the food, some of us cooked it (me included) and some play football. It is the same “team-building” atmosphere from the last years, with more persons and more food (maybe it was too hot to eat but it remained a lot of food). Read the rest of this entry »
NTFS partition resize with free tools
Last week I need a new partition on my external drive. The HDD has 80Gb split in 2 partitions, one of 20Gb and one of around 56Gb. The first partition was nearly full and the second had 30Gb of free space (but with many fragmented files). The obvious solution is to move the 26Gb from the second partition to another drive, delete it and create 2 smaller ones. But if you don’t have the 26Gb of temporary space there is another solution: shrink the second partition and create a new one in the free remaining space. This can be achieved with Partition Magic but the tool is not free. (You can download a trial version and see if it is working but using free tools is better – and I was eager to see if it is possible). The process I’ll describe below is simple and can be applied to any external HDD drive with ntfs partitions (and probably other types, by using the correct tools).
