Celebrating Sibiu Web Meetup’s 1 Year!

Share

Can you believe it? It’s been a whole year since we started Sibiu Web Meetup! It’s time to celebrate an incredible year of cool meetups, knowledge exchange and community building.

A trip down memory lane

It all started in November 2018. Sibiu Web Meetup was the first of the kind in our city at the time. The first meetups gathered 20+ people per session. We were astonished by how well tech passionates welcomed the event.

By March 2019 we had reached an increase in attendance of 100% and all seats booked. In April we were checking the fourth meetup and we ran out of free seats.

During the next three months cool and interesting topics gathered web development enthusiasts: from testing, patterns and IoT, to User Experience, Mobile JavaScript Development, React and API development. Catch a glimpse of SWM past presentations right here.

Behind every success is a team

Between idea, concept, plan and success there is the team that makes it all possible and bonds everything to its right place.

ROPARDO, the sponsor behind Sibiu Web Meetup

Here is what Claudiu Zgripcea, CTO of ROPARDO, says about offering sponsorship for the Sibiu Web Meetup project:

ROPARDO is an active player in the community because we believe in the power of giving back to the society. We provide our know-how and resources to projects that support excellence in health, education and science.

Our newest commitment in education and development consists of a series of meetups. By supporting this project we wanted to create and offer a fulfilling meaningful experience for web development students and seniors. We take a great deal of pride in being path breakers for high school and university students. Of course, we have to thank our partner and event host, the Faculty of Sciences, where all meetups happen.

We’re honored to be part of the Sibiu Web Meetup success!

Meet Ștefan, the enthusiast behind Sibiu Web Meetup. Hello, Ștefan! Please tell us how did it all start?

Let me tell you about Sibiu Web Meetup: it’s for anyone sharing an interest in web development, web design and all other web related topics. The idea behind Sibiu Web Meetup came from the need for similar events in the local area. When I was a student, I searched for similar events, but I couldn’t find one.

I planned an initial event and presented it to the CTO of ROPARDO and with his help and the rest of the marketing team we put together the first Sibiu Web Meetup. I had a huge amount of support from the software engineering company where I work. I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude and appreciation for the support and financial assistance ROPARDO provided.

Why come to Sibiu Web Meetup in first place?

Being a part of a community is a great way to learn new things. You get to share what you know and learn what others share from their experience. Community building is essential in creating a long-lasting knowledge base. The main reason to participate is knowledge exchange with other like-minded people.

Any advice for beginners in the dev community?

Join a community (ours is growing as we speak), read lots of articles, go to conferences and hackathons. It’s never too early to start attending meetups. Networking is a huge reason to attend meetups.

Can you share a bit about the current format of a meetup?

Sure. We meet each month (usually around the middle of the month), Fridays evenings. The speakers we bring on stage are professional people that know their way around the topics they talk about. Q&A sessions transform the presentations from a simple lecture into a real learning experience.

What’s next?

In my one year with this community I can’t wait for what’s to come next. 😊

We’re preparing some awesome stuff for our constantly growing community. We’re going to be of service to students, so future meetups will bring the subtle art of giving an elevator pitch. We encourage junior and senior developers to show their passion for the technology they like to use.

Please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have a topic you’d like to talk about or a project you want to present! If you want to be part of the SWM groups, you can find us here:
